The Event
The Anytime Holidays Bodyboarding Showdown is set to take place from 13th - 17th December. A generous window period has been allowed to ensure the most hard-core waves possible are ridden for this exciting event. The briefing will be a secret venue and will take place on 12 December. The contest format has also changed from the norm and will allow each entrant to ride twice with their two scores added together. Only the top 8 riders will proceed to the semi-finals. First place gets a whopping R10 000 and prize money will be awarded up to 4th place. The contest venue will also be a secret only being announced to the riders on the morning the green light is given. The contest area covers numerous reef breaks from Scottburgh to Port Edward and entries have been limited so the event can run in a single day, if conditions allow. The judging criteria is simple, only Xtreme manoeuvres such as air roll spins, inverts, back flips and air spins will be getting the judges attention. The contestant who completes these high risk manoeuvres on the biggest and best wave with the most speed and control will get the glory. Spins and rolls will score you nothing! Prize giving will be a gala evening affair on the final night of the festival on 19th December where all the disciplines will receive their awards.

Sunday – Day 1 - SUNCOAST Beach

2009 Champ Sacha Specker Launched any chance that he got

Women’s, Boys, Men’s, Masters, Grand Masters and Pro divisions all had a chance to surf today at SUN COAST Beach. With light winds and a fun swell pushing through on this beautiful spring day. Waves improved throughout the day, allowing the Pro division to show their stuff off at the end of the day.
Women’s division riders Niki Gericke (EP) and Suzie Vester (NKZN) fought it out in a closely contested heat, making the judges work for their money early on Sunday morning. Janice de Kock (WP) dominated in the next heat securing a solid maximum score of 300 points for her efforts.
Martin Otto was an early standout, with a solid outside wave. It was actually the first wave of the contest that the judges marked in the ‘Very Good’ category, scoring 7s and above.
Josh Kleve has been putting in a lot of time in the water and this could be seen in his riding as he destroyed the competition in his heat. The Southern KwaZulu Natal got off to a great start in the Men’s division with Rayner Venter and Jaryd Van Daalen securing 300 points each for their sides. Central KZN’s Peter Oberholzer did really well to win his heat, whilst George Wolfaard (Bol) and Jonathan Bernon (NKZN) took first place awards away from the rest of the riders in their respected heats.
Jared Houston Floating Roll
Winning their first round heats in the Boy’s division, Niklas Martin (EP), Michael Searle (EP), Wesley Coetzee (SKZN), Ethan Koopsmans (WP) and Warren du Preez (SKZN) made sure that everyone on the beach was confident in the up and coming generation of Boy’s riders. Everyone in South African Bodyboarding remembers how Alistair Taylor graduated through the ranks of Boy’s division to eventually become a world title contender and National Hero of the Sport.
Sick BackFlip
In the Grand Masters division Mike “MJ” van Huyssteen claimed that conditions pushed him to another level and it showed as he made short work of his adversaries collecting his 300 points.
The Pro Division was as explosive as ever, with Iain Campbell (CKZN) ramping into an invert and making sure of his backup wave. SA Champion 2009 Sacha Specker (WP) started consistently with some flowing bash reverses. Warren Canepa (EP) flipped out of the bowl and straight into another forward spin, leaving spectators in awe. As the South West really started to gust Michael Ostler (CKZN) put together some good combo’s to win his heat, as did Wesley Fischer (CKZN). Stef Coetzee (NKZN) threw down a big back flip as his heat drew to a close, making the Totalizes job more difficult by bringing the placements on a knife’s edge. The final pro heat of the day was a slugfest that would have impressed everyone on the beach that had managed not to blow away in the gusts that was stripping the beach. Derek Footit (SKZN) and Mark McCarthy (NKZN) both had two high scoring rides with back-ups , but McCarthy managed to edge out Footit and claim his first SA Champs Pro round one win in a couple of years. Mark knows when to peak though as he has made the finals of SA Champs 2008 and 2009, he won in 2008 and placed 3rd in 2009.
Big City Life - Awesome Day at SUN COAST Beach
Everyone packed up and rushed out of the wind into the safety of the bustling Sun Coast Casino and Entertainment World. The event will kick off at 08:00am tomorrow morning at SUN COAST Beach; SABA would like to thank the sponsors for their support today. The 2010 SA Championships have been sponsored by the EThekwini Municipality, Suncoast Casino & Entertainment World, Nando’s, Gotcha, Turbo Bodyboards and Power Balance

SA Champs 2010 Development Clinic

Just before lunch on Sunday the waters of SUN COAST Beach were greeted by the first of the development clinics to be held at this years South African Bodyboarding Championships. The scene was set, the sun burning down and the warm waters of the Indian Ocean on this amazing spring day made it easy to convince the kids to enter the water. In addition to this, South Africa’s best Bodyboarders offered their assistance to the stoked kids on the beach. Among the Professional riders was South African celebrity and local icon Sihle Xaba from "The Bay of Plenty", who devoted his time to making sure that all the children left the water with grins from ear to ear. (Mission complete Sihle - Well done)

After they were finished in the water they were able to enjoy the competition in the water with snacks and drinks that Sun Coast Casino and Entertainment World had provided.

The South African Bodyboarding Community present at SUN COAST Beach looks forward to having the kids back again during the week as the event continues throughout the week. For the best Bodyboarding action in the country Please make sure you come and join the action down at SUN COAST Beach.

Down goes the Gauntlet!!!

Six Provincial Teams, officials and supporters gathered in the Delano Room at Suncoast Casino & Entertainment World. The event schedule, competition rules and procedures were all explained to the eager crowd.
At a glance everyone appeared friendly enough, but a closer look clarified that there was a lot of ‘sizing up’ of the competition going on in that room. The gauntlet was thrown down to the provinces, inviting them to relieve Central KwaZulu Natal of the trophy that they have ‘owned’ for 21 years. The “Fishman” Trophy is up for grabs for the team with the most points at the end of the event. With all the teams looking hungrier than ever it is going to be a tough fight, but this will ensure that the competitors lay it all on the line for their teams during their heats.
After the briefing everyone trooped off to support Mark McCarthy and Mike van Huyssteen as they were interviewed on East Coast Radio. Mark and MJ pulled off a confident performance in front of the microphone.
The competition is set to get underway at 8am on Sunday morning at SUN COAST Beach. I would suggest to the competitors that they should get there earlier to check the conditions and possibly get a surf in before their heats and the start of the event.

South African Championships 2010

This year marks the 24th annual South African Bodyboarding Championships which will be held at Sun Coast Beach in Durban from the 26th of September to the 1st of October. The event has been endorsed by the eThekwini Municipality, Suncoast Casino & Entertainment World, Nando’s, Gotcha, Turbo Bodyboards and Power Balance

Competitors and spectators alike can expect to enjoy some great bodyboarding action on the shallow banks off Durban. The organisers are hopeful that the combination of the consistent Durban sand banks and some of the best Bodyboarders in the world will produce jaw dropping action that spectators can enjoy from the comfort of the SUN COAST beach.
The South African Championships has always been the event of the year that every rider wants to win. Teams from around the country are hungrier than ever to win that team trophy known as the ‘Fishman’. The Central Kwa-Zulu Natal team has won the national trophy 21 out of 23 times; this means that to secure the ‘Fishman’ this year the traveling provinces are going to have to beat them at their home grounds.
The event has already been stated by many as the ‘one to win’.
“To win SA Champs in Durban ‘the birthplace’ of South African Bodyboarding…now that’s what I wanna do!” Mark McCarthy (Professional Bodyboarder, IBA Tour Contender and Richards Bay South African Champs 2008 winner).
Other International competitors such as Jared Houston (currently ranked 6th in the world), Sacha Specker, Charles Pass and Michael Ostler will be trying to take home this year’s title and the purse.

Contestants will be sent out into the water on the 26th of September to surf 18 to 20 minute heats against one another with two of their wave rides counting. Each division will compete in a minimum of two heats, with the top sixteen qualifying for the final rounds in the competition. Points earned from riders finishing placements in their division will be added together and accredited to their teams to determine the provincial team standings. On Friday the 1st of October the 2010 South African Champions will be announced as well as the winning Province. The question is “Will the Fishman Stay in its home of 21 years or will there be an upset?”

The South African Bodyboarding Championship event has come a long way since its inception in 1987 at ‘Super tubes’ in Jeffrey’s Bay.
Back in those days contestants performed very similar moves to those of Surfing, cutbacks, floaters and possibly even a ‘360° belly-spin’. Nowadays, competing in a Bodyboarding event means swift aerial manoeuvres with powerful landings. This sport has lead the way in terms of board-sport manoeuvres and as Bodyboarders begin to include jet-ski tow-outs into their bag of tricks the sky is quite literally ‘the limit’.

As this event has been set during the September school holidays we would like to urge you to come and join us on the at SUNCOAST Beach from Sunday the 26th of September to Friday the 1st of October, anytime from 08:00 to 16:00.

The Wedge Classic 2010 Pro division winner

The Wedge Classic 2010 in Plettenberg Bay was a huge success this year. Unfortunately I had to pull out at the last minute because of unforeseen work obligations, so I missed out. The waves played there part and Wesley Mc Quillan organised an amazing event that has been claimed by many to have been the best in years. I was really stoked to hear about the man on man heats and the surprise winner of the Pro division, Dylan Van Tonder. So I caught up with him…

Hey bud, How you doing? Still buzzing from an amazing win at Plett and over world tour contender Mark McCarthy?

Hey Oros! All's good here thanks...Yea, was such a hype throughout the whole contest and just soo stoked to have won it! Waves really did come to the party as well, so was glad on that too!

Did the contest go as planned for you?

To be honest, I had no game plan at all.Was just out there to see how well I could do...no intent on winning!! Haha...but friends who had watched my previous heats said that i was on the way for a win...

How did you find the man on man heats?

The man on man heats were quite rad.I find that it basically gives everyone a fair chance in the end, but would say that wave selection is vital.

Do you spend a lot of time at the Wedge during the year?

I've been in Plett a couple times this, but haven't spent much time out at wedge...The banks earlier in the year weren't even half as good as to what they are now!So will definitely be making trips out there soon!

I heard that you were riding a DK board, how’d that work?

Ya! Haha...Sean Tickner actually gave me the board at last years wedge classic and been digging it ever since! Took some time getting use to proning it, but got it down now.

The next event is the West Coast Classic, very exciting; will you be competing in that?

Yea, will be an awesome event! Waves are soo sick up that way! Shall try my best to be there!

Good Luck for that one then! Thanks man

Wedge Classic 2010

The Wedge contest is definitely one of my favourite contests on the SABA tour… The scenery is amazing, waves are fun and there are easily a hundred boogers all looking to have a good time. Wesley Mc Quillan organised the competition last year and this year is looking bigger and better, with a possible Supersport slot being organised… So I caught up with Wes and this is what he had to say.

What made you take over the running of the event?

I am asking my self the same question at the moment!!! LOL
I have such great memories of riding the Wedge, and just want to keep The legacy going for all the new guys.

Who have you got onboard?

Bitou Tourism
Rockstar Energy drink
Derevko Wetsuits
Black Flys
Rossi Bodyboards
Billabong
Powerbalance
The Surf shop
Wildthing Paintball
Showme.co.za
The Computer Shop
Dolphin Adventures
Kodak

And there are still more getting involved!

Any idea how the banks have been lately?

Haven't had any time to get in the water myself but Wedge is always fun!!! Just hope we get some swell !!!

Are you going to have a chance to party this year now that you’re running things or will there only be an appearance on the last night?

WOW hard to say, if all is running smooth and things are going to plan I think there will be some time to party with all the boys!! I only seem to get to see you guys once
a year these days, so must make the most of it!! The Prize giving is going to be sick!!! Great Resturant, big screen T.V for the soccer final......EPIC

Awesome - Looking forward to it!

Confidence under pressure

"most of the guys are coming back from Hawaii to ride the Cape Classic, you’re going to have to up your game to compete with these global contenders…"

Wow… what a contest! If you missed the Live webcast, then I’m sorry I’m going to be that irritating guy that is usually already in the water before you and tell you “you missed out!” The guys were putting it all on the line and Jared ‘Jerry’ Houston enforced his already growing popularity with a solid 3rd in a tightly contested final. But well done to the guys and everyone in the final especially Amaury Lavernhe, who absolutely dominated his second Pipeline final…

But back to us, the Cape Classic is drawing ever so close and hopefully you have been surfing and training as much as possible, because this is the final instalment of “So you Wanna be a Champion…”
Today we’re gonna wrap up with the Doc’s ideas around ‘Positive Self-Talk’ and ‘Virtual Surfing’. These are extremely important to any contest surfer and as most of the guys are coming back from Hawaii to ride the Cape Classic, you’re going to have to up your game to compete with these global contenders…

What studies have suggested is that in “the pressure of a heat, human nature seems to dictate that the focus of attention keeps swinging to all the things that are going wrong with your performance. Even while the heat is still on, many surfers focus on the potential negative consequences that a poor performance would have in their career and life.”

"Focus on positives that have happened during the heat"

Research also “shows that good self-belief while competing is an important discriminating factor between winners and losers in a wide range of sports. Without strong self-belief, you will not surf as aggressively or show the level of technical competence needed to make an impression on the judges.”

"Focus on positives that have happened prior to the heat"

To create this self-belief you need to apply “an evidence-based approach that allows you to create strong, believable, positive self-statements that you can dwell on at various stages during your heat.” So, basically you must look for the evidence that you are good enough to make it through the heat. The self-belief building evidence that you review during your heat falls into two categories…
1. Evidence that has to do with what has happened during the heat, and
2. Evidence that has to do with what has happened prior to the heat.

1. Focus on positives that have happened during the heat
During the heat the best time for you to kick off your self-belief building
positive evidence review is at the start of the paddle out after each ride.
You can make the strongest impact on your self-belief when you review your
most recent positive evidence. Therefore, you need to identify and highlight
the positives from the wave you have just ridden.

2. Focus on positives that have happened prior to the heat
The other source of evidence that you can review during your heat has to do
with what has happened prior to the start of the heat. Here you can find an
extremely wide range of evidence to talk about to yourself so that you have strong self-belief during your heat. There is a menu of evidence sources that you must focus on…
A. Focus on your in-water training evidence
Prior to your heat, you should identify a number of specific occasions from your training diary where you have surfed well in conditions similar to those of the upcoming heat
B. Focus on you dry-land training evidence
You can also generate positive statements prior to a heat that relates to the work that you have been doing away from the water. Strength and conditioning, core stability, yoga, board testing, diet and mental skills are just
some of the pieces of evidence that you could use to build self-belief.

C. Focus on your past competition success evidence
Successful past competitions provide a great opportunity for gathering self-belief
building evidence.

4. “Virtual Surfing” – How the right Mental Practice can Boost Your Surfing
Virtual surfing refers to process of going through on land, and even in the water, your surfing moves and thought structures.

The Post Heat Debrief -Never Make The Same Mistake Twice!
After each heat, you should logically review what occurred during your heat. You should identify the things that went well. Specifically you must always identify five positives from each and every heat. This trains your brain to start to identify positives on a regular basis and also allows you to develop a list of evidence which you can use for your evidence self-statements in the future.
You also need to identify what you need to be improve from your heat. This may be something that is short term, which you can ensure that you deal with during the next heat, such as sticking closely to your landmark or paddling hard at the peak.

Cool guys and girls, hopefully you’ve enjoyed these articles and Dr. Mike Martin’s wise words. Hope to see some of these tools being applied at the Cape Classic this weekend…

Good Luck!!!

McCarthy vs. Worsley Interview (part II)

Here’s the interview from Marks side, you should remember that this is not a ‘rebuttal’ to Daniel’s. They were given the interviews at the same time, without knowing each other’s answers.

"the last thing you need is some squeaky voice telling you lies"

Mark McCarthy
Age: 26
Weight: 70
Height: 1.7
Reach: 1 (Mark, I’m not too sure what you mean by this-maybe you only need to reach him one time to knock him out...)
How are you?
I am very well thanks, just counting down the days before I leave for Hawaii! I will be off on the 3rd February and back on the 1st March to train for the Cape Classic . (Mark is in Hawaii right now getting ready for the Turbo Pipeline Pro)

"he reminded me of that cartoon character called widget, skinny purple guy with a abnormally big head"

You know that this is the McCarthy vs. Worsley interview so is there anything you would like to get off your chest?
Well, let’s start with a small intro about this Dan Worsley. So to learn a bit more about Dan I Googled his name and got "Your search - Dan Worsley - did not match any documents "So I tried a detailed search and then got "Your search on Dan Worsley"/ Age; 25, / Profession; cabinet-making rookie/ Hero; Doctor Phil did not match any documents”
So for some more insight about Dan I had to mull over the time spent together with Dan. We all know Dan as a wanna be Soccer player with amazing Bodyboarding talent...but his real talent is how much crap he talks...If you ever need a surf report the last person to call is Dan! Every time I call him for a report Horse Trails is firing Bru! Only to arrive to find 1 foot pooh! So rather just save the airtime, the last thing you need is some squeaky voice telling you lies.
So lets think...anything to get off my chest...Maybe we should just dust the wood chips off Dan’s chest after an 18 hour day in the mill.

What are you better than him at?
Hummm Soccer, Poker, Foosball...I Know Dan is a super competitive guy but after his girl friend left him to live with Phil in London he is just no the same guy...

Why are you better than he is?
Well he is always going on about how hot he is and that the girls just froth over him...when I first met Dan he reminded me of that cartoon character called widget, skinny purple guy with a abnormally big head.
What’s your favourite thing about him?
He is one of the best wingmen ever! I remember in 2008 at the Margate contest when we were out at back-line drowning our sorrows after getting knocked out of the contest and got into a bit of confrontation with a touring rugby team, as Dan was trying to hook up with one of their girlfriends. All I heard was “Mark I got your back!” then seeing him liberty the biggest guy in the team! But that’s about far as it goes...

"Its not as if he is a team player..."

What’s your worst thing about him?
His smoking habits

Why did Daniel hang around at SA Champs last year after being knocked out?
You got me there...only he will know why he hanged out for 5 days after getting knocked the first day of competing. Its not as if he is a team player...maybe he was just trying to live the dream and regretting going back to the saw mill...
"his path...is Mercury Live on Monday nights"

Have you learnt anything from each other?
I learn so much from all of Dan's mistakes.

Do you have any advice for him?
Not really hey, Dan needs just stay true to his path and that path is Mercury Live on Monday nights...0h and stop trying to be like Phil.

McCarthy vs. Worsley Interview

"He makes his face look like Jacob Zuma"

These are two of the most talented guys on the SABA Tour at the moment and two of the funniest. Whenever you spend time with one of them searching for waves you'll laugh all day. But when they both team up on a trip then you're guaranteed to be sore from giggling the next day. I think it’s the competitive drive as well as the love of waves and having fun that ensures anyone around them is giggling at their constant attacks on each other. And if you hang around laughing too long you will definately be dragged into the action.
So if you're ‘comebacks’ aren’t up to scratch keep a safe distance or maybe just read this interview…

"What are you better than him at?
- Controlling my Facebook..."

If I had to make a glossary for you to refer too when one of their quips seems random we would be here all day, so I’ll just give you one clue to help you get there. When they constantly mention anything to do with “Cutting Onions” think what happens to you when you cut onions.

Daniel Worsley
Age: 23
Weight: 65
Height: 171 cm (I’m a carpenter, I work in centimeters)
Reach: McCarthy's face
How are you? Oh I’m just great. How are you?

"Mark stop riding gold boards!"

You know that this is the McCarthy vs. Worsley interview so is there anything you would like to get off your chest?
Just when I though I was too old to peruse a Bodyboarding career, I saw a “has been” (or should I say a “ has never been”) who is way to old, become top 5 in the world. If that's possible, then anything is. Thanks Mark, you've opened my eyes

What are you better than him at?
Controlling my Facebook,
Bodyboarding, this list is going to go on forever, can't you just ask me what I’m not better than him at? ;)

Why are you better than he is?
Well, you couldn't get much worse...
Plus his ex girlfriend just dumped him for a guy who owns an island in Australia so he's pretty vulnerable right now.
Just give him time and he'll be back on his game.

What’s your favorite thing about him?
How he makes his face look like Jacob Zuma on land, (hehehehe)

What’s your worst thing about him?
How he makes his style look like Uri Valado in the water.

Why did you decide to hang around at SA Champs last year after being knocked out?
Haha, to find out the true story about Mark and Jocelyn. Believe me, it was worth sticking around for.

What have you learnt anything from each other?
How to cut onions.
How to watch each others back (especially in Backline)

Do you have any advice for him?
Come on Mark, it's been so long now, just get over her and move on.
You must also move on from your rebound girl, Suzie is now married.
Stop working in the onion factory, and stop riding gold boards.
Phil me up!

Stay tuned for Marks side of the story...it'll be up soon!

Wesley Fischer in 2 minutes...

"Hawaii is just so sick, the crowds obviously suck but the pipe event is all worth it!"

Hey bud, we missed you at SA’s last year. Did you miss not being
a part of the Reef SA Bodyboarding Championship 2009? What have you been up too?

Boet, I missed it big time... I love being with my team, all the people which had such a huge part to do with my BB... all the different coaches that I have had while being part of the team... I been doing heaps of flowboarding, I mean a lot! I made the SA team for flowboarding as a standup, which was rad and we went to Singapore to compete in the world champs there and I won, as a standup! It’s been a good year...

On the SABA tour, which contest was your favorite and why?

Very, very hard to say, every event has something special about it... Durbs cause its home, Margate cause its always got waves, cave rock cause its cave rock and CT cause of the roaming venue, Plett cause its a wedge! Probably the bluff event, cause its one of the few events I have seen in SA where the sport was really incredible to watch and all the top riders were there to perform properly!

Hawaii this winter? And any plans for next year’s tour?
I hope so man... Hawaii is just so sick, the crowds obviously suck but the pipe event is all worth it! I really would love to give the tour a full go this year but backing is needed, I would love to see the tour getting a blanket spono, which there is some talk about... so I’ll see closer to the time

Which events we likely to see you at next year?

CT, Margate, Durbs!
Peace
